Young defender Sumit Rathi was tipped to complete a move this transfer window, but now his future remains in the air.

As per Bengali news portal kolkata24x7, Rathi was close to leaving the Green and Maroon brigade in the first week of the January transfer window with two ISL clubs including Odisha FC reportedly interested in securing his signature.

But things have changed since, Odisha FC and ATK Mohun Bagan were claimed to be in final talks to complete the transfer, an injury to Deepak Tangri forced his parent club to back out of a potential deal.

Sumit Rathi, a young Center Back who can also be deployed as a Left Back started his footballing career with AIFF’s Elite Academy and later on went onto to join the now defunct Indian Arrows.

The 21 year-old moved to ATK FC reserves in the year 2018 and soon impressed those within the club, thus helping him earn a promotion to the senior squad of ATK FC the very next season. Rathi emerged to spotlight under Antonio Habas by making it to the Spaniard’s starting XI and became a part of ATK FC’s 2019/2020 ISL trophy winning team, he also added the crown of Emerging Player of the season.

In 2020, Sumit Rathi signed a 5 year deal with ATK Mohun Bagan and since then has barely posted a mere 350 minutes in the Hero ISL. It is learned that Juan Ferrando’s side is expected to block a move away for him if the injury list at the club continues to grow as there is a lack of quality backups for mainstays in the team.
